In Identifying What Creates Meaning, students learn how visual features communicate messages beyond what is simply seen. Lessons focus on images, colours, symbols, layout, and text. Students examine how these elements work together to influence emotions and understanding. By recognising how meaning is created, learners become critical viewers who can interpret adverts, posters, cartoons, and infographics effectively.

Progression Across Grades

-Grade 10: Introduction to poetry terminology, basic techniques, and foundational analysis skills.
-Grade 11: Deeper exploration of poetic form, tone, and theme with increased cognitive demand.
-Grade 12: Advanced interpretation and essay-style analysis of both prescribed and unseen poems.

What Learners Will Learn

Purpose of the Module

-Close Reading Skills: How to read a poem attentively and identify key ideas, themes, and emotions.
-Poetic Devices: Mastery of figurative language, sound devices, imagery, tone, diction, symbolism, and structure.
-Interpretation: Understanding how poets use language deliberately to create meaning and influence readers.
-Critical Thinking: Evaluating the effectiveness of poetic techniques and forming reasoned interpretations.
-Structured Responses: Writing well-organised answers, including paragraph responses and full literary essays. -Unseen Poetry: Approaching unfamiliar poems with confidence, using analysis strategies taught throughout the module.

This module prepares learners for formal assessments and examinations while cultivating an appreciation for poetry as a powerful form of expression. By the end of Grade 12, learners will be able to analyse poetry independently, confidently, and with insight.
